Since this month's chapter meeting falls on the Thursday before The Woodward Dream Cruise, we're going to hold the meeting "on Woodward"!

Don't go to LaFontaine - the meeting will be held in "our" Woodward parking lot on Thursday, August 19th, at 7:00 p.m. I figured this would give us a chance to look over the lot and make our plans for parking there on Friday and Saturday. After the meeting (and before, too), we can go cruisin' on Woodward (I hear there are a lot of classic cars out there on the street in the evenings already) or just relax and watch the other cruisers go by.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Cheers,

Gains

It's Over!!!!

Please send me any pics you have of the second annual "Hot August Nights in Highland" car show.

I am writing to urge you all to oppose Michigan House Bill 5897, which would increase the fees for historic vehicles.

As you know, currently a vehicle with a historic registration pays a $30 fee, which is valid for 15 years. A vehicle owner might instead choose an authentic "same year" plate, paying a one time registration fee of $35 (non expiring).

Under HB 5897, a vehicle owner would pay $30 per year for a registration, regardless of registration type (for either an historic plate or an authentic plate).

The current Michigan registration process and fee structure are surprisingly generous and refreshing in this day and age compared to other states. I would certainly hate to see that changed.

Please oppose HB 5897.

I have updated the "event photos" page with photos you sent in from all previous events (Hot August Nights in Highland, and Woodward) but still don't have any from the Co-Vention in Dayton etc. If anyone has any, please send them to me. If you have any updates, stories about your car, etc. that you would like to see on the site, please let me know.

CONGRATULATIONS TO DOUG SCIBERRAS!!

Doug was awarded with Baker's of Milford's Cruiser of the Year for 2009!!!

It is with a very heavy heart that I type this. The Motor City Chapter of POCI, and POCI as a global organization have lost a true dear friend. Tira O'Brien has passed away. The photo here is the most recent one I have of Tira taken at the Convention in Tulsa. Tira (right) and Kendra (left) are standing with our POCI Chapter Charter. Tira was one of the Charter members of Motor City POCI and without her and Tom's support, there wouldn't be a chapter.

Tom, and Tira shared a love of Pontiacs, especially the little known "Custom S." There is one other love that I was able to share with Tom and Tira, and that was the love of the outdoors, especially the Upper Peninsula, where I grew up. Their work with the Commemorative Bucks of Michigan is well known to anyone familiar with that organization. Both CBM and POCI lost a dedicated worker, and true ambassador, but both organizations are much better due to the dedication shown by Tom and Tira.

Tira, you will be missed, and never forgotten.

The "show and tell" portion of the January meeting was a great treat to those in attendance. We should do this more often. Especially in weather like this. It makes everyone think of warmer days with our cars. Thanks to all who shared their collectibles and amazing stories.

I've just learned that Whitehouse Graphics is selling a print of John's 1971 1/2 GT-37. Eric White created this print in early November, 2008 and presented it to John and Marge. In memory of John, Marge Sawruk has given permission to White House Graphics to reprint this artwork and offer it to the public. Of the thirty-five dollar purchase price, twenty-five dollars will be donated, in John Sawruk's name, to the kidney cancer research programs of the University of MIchigan and the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Research Center in New York City.

Follow the link for ordering information.
